Snorri S. Thorgeirsson, M.D., Ph.D. -
Laboratory Chief and Principal Investigator
Dr.
Thorgeirsson obtained his M.D. degree in 1968 from the University
of Iceland, Reykjavik. He studied biochemistry and pharmacology
with
Sir Colin Dollery and Prof. Donald S. Davies at the Royal Postgraduate
Medical School in London, England and obtained Ph.D. from University
of London in 1971. Dr. Thorgeirsson has been at the National Institutes
of Health since 1972. In 1981 Dr. Thorgeirsson became Chief of the
Laboratory of Experimental Carcinogenesis, National Cancer Institute.
His current research interests are centered on the application of
transgenic mouse models as paradigms for human diseases and stem
cell biology. In 1988 he received the NIH Merit Award. He has served
on
editorial boards of the various scientific journals and is currently
an Associate Editor for Hepatology. In addition, Dr. Thorgeirsson
is a member of several professional scientific societies. He has
supervised both graduate and medical school students from the United
States and
abroad. Dr. Thorgeirsson is also recognized both nationally and internationally
by invitations to organize and chair meetings/conferences, present
lectures, serve as a participant in review groups, visiting professorships,
etc. He has been the U.S. Representative for the Etiology (now the
Basic Sciences) Area of the US/Japan Cooperative Cancer Research
Program since 1994. Dr. Thorgeirsson has published over 300 papers,
including
chapters in books. His current research interests focus on the use
of transgenic mouse models as paradigms for human cancers, in particular
liver cancer and cellular and molecular biology of hepatic stem cell
compartment.
